A Guide to the Region's Most Beautiful Waterfalls and How to Reach Them
The cool, misty air of the Matagalpa highlands is a welcome respite, but even in the mountains, there’s no better feeling than a refreshing dip in natural water. Thanks to the high rainfall and numerous forest reserves, the region is laced with streams and rivers that feed into stunning, powerful waterfalls.
Visiting these cascadas offers a perfect break from trekking and a chance to truly immerse yourself in the pristine, natural beauty of the north. Here is a guide to some of the most beautiful waterfalls near Matagalpa and the logistics required to visit them.
1. Cascada de la Luna (Waterfall of the Moon)
Vibe: Accessible and perfect for relaxation.
Location: Located relatively close to the city center and many coffee haciendas.
Why Visit: This waterfall is known for its beautiful basin and accessible trails. The area around the cascade is often well-maintained by the local community, making it a great place to spend a few hours swimming and picnicking. The trail leading to it is scenic, passing through small farming communities and lush greenery.
2. Salto Grande (The Big Leap)
Vibe: Impressive and powerful.
Location: Often found near larger, well-known reserves.
Why Visit: True to its name, Salto Grande is a powerful and tall waterfall. The sheer volume of water cascading over the rocks makes for a spectacular sight, especially during or immediately following the rainy season. The trails here are typically more rugged, offering a slightly more adventurous hike than Cascada de la Luna.
3. Waterfalls in the Peñas Blancas Reserve
Vibe: Remote and mystical.
Location: Deep within the Peñas Blancas Nature Reserve.
Why Visit: As highlighted in our previous guide, the reserve is home to several waterfalls, including the impressive Salto de la Culebra (The Snake’s Leap). These falls are less about a casual swim and more about the challenging, rewarding hike through the thick cloud forest required to reach them. The remote nature means the water is exceptionally clean, and the surrounding jungle is pristine.
Getting There: Essential Transport Tips
Matagalpa’s waterfalls are rarely on a direct bus route. Reaching them requires planning, and often, reliable private transport.
Local Buses (Microbuses): You can take a local chicken bus or microbus from the Matagalpa terminal to the nearest town (e.g., in the direction of Jinotega or a nearby rural community). However, you will usually need to walk the final 3–5 kilometers on unpaved roads to reach the cascade entrance.
Taxis / Mototaxis: Hiring a local taxi or a motorized taxi (mototaxi) is essential for the final leg of the journey, but agree on the price and the waiting time with the driver before you set off!
Best Option: Organized Transport: For hassle-free access to remote spots like Peñas Blancas, booking a private tour or shuttle service is the most efficient and safest way to travel, ensuring you don't waste precious time figuring out logistics.
Don't miss the chance to cool off and witness the natural power of the water that feeds the region's famous coffee fields.
