Isla Ometepe
Island Guide

City Guide

Welcome to Ometepe Island, a true natural wonder rising from the waters of Lake Nicaragua. Formed by two colossal volcanoes, Mombacho and Concepción, the island is a UNESCO biosphere reserve and a paradise for nature lovers, adventurers, and those seeking a tranquil escape. Here, you will find a blend of stunning landscapes, unique wildlife, and a relaxed, authentic way of life.

Practical Information for Your Trip to Ometepe Island

How to get there:

From the Mainland: The only way to get to Ometepe is by ferry from the port of San Jorge, just outside the city of Rivas. Ferries and smaller passenger boats, called "lanchas," run multiple times a day. The ferry ride takes about 1 hour and is an experience in itself, offering incredible views of the twin volcanoes as you approach.

From other cities:

Tourist shuttles and local buses from Managua, Granada, Leon and San Juan del Sur all terminate in Rivas. From there, you can take a short taxi ride to the port of San Jorge to catch the ferry.

Best time to visit:

The dry season, from November to April, is the best time for hiking and outdoor activities. The trails are less muddy, and the skies are generally clear. The rainy season, from May to October, makes the island incredibly lush and green, and is the best time to see the waterfalls at their full strength.

Getting around:

Ometepe is much larger than it appears. The most popular way to explore is by renting a scooter or a quad bike, which gives you the freedom to discover hidden corners and remote beaches. Bicycles are a good option for shorter distances. Taxis and public buses are also available but run less frequently.

Budget:

Ometepe offers a wide range of options, from budget-friendly hostels to eco-lodges. A daily budget for a backpacker can range from $25 to $50, depending on activities and food choices.

A dive into history

Ometepe's history stretches back thousands of years. The island was originally inhabited by a succession of indigenous tribes, including the Chibcha, Chorotega, and Nicarao peoples. They believed the island was sacred, a feeling that still resonates with visitors today. Evidence of this pre-Columbian past is abundant in the form of petroglyphs and stone statues, which are scattered throughout the island. In the 19th century, Ometepe became a refuge for locals hiding from English and French pirates who used Lake Nicaragua to cross from the Caribbean to the Pacific. This rich history, combined with its unique geography, led to its designation as a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 2010.

What to do in Isla Ometepe:

Hike the Volcanoes:

Ometepe is defined by its two volcanoes, each offering a distinct hiking experience. The Concepción volcano is an active, steep, and challenging climb that takes most of a day. It offers rewarding panoramic views from the summit. The Maderas volcano is dormant and covered in a cloud forest. This hike is a muddy trek through dense jungle to a crater lake at the summit.

Explore by motorbike:

Renting a scooter or motorbike is the best way to experience the island at your own pace. You can discover the rural villages, drive along the isthmus that connects the two volcanoes, and find secluded beaches. Just be prepared for some bumpy, unpaved roads.

Swim in Ojo de Agua:

After a long hike, there is no better way to relax than a swim in the natural spring of Ojo de Agua. This natural swimming pool, fed by a cool underground river from Maderas volcano, is rich in minerals and surrounded by lush jungle. It is a perfect spot to cool off and rejuvenate.

Hike to San Ramón waterfall:

Located on the slopes of Maderas volcano, this 50-meter-high waterfall is a beautiful sight. The hike to the falls takes you through the jungle, offering a great chance to see monkeys and a variety of birds. The waterfall is a great reward at the end of the hike.

Go kayaking on Rio Istian:

Paddle through the tranquil waters of the Rio Istian, a river that meanders through a wetland area. This is a great activity for wildlife spotting, with the chance to see monkeys, turtles, and a wide variety of birds.

Visit Punta Jesús María:

This is a thin spit of land that extends out into Lake Nicaragua. It is a perfect spot to watch the sunset, with a panoramic view of both volcanoes. During the dry season, you can walk a long way out into the lake with water on both sides of you.
