Practical information

How to get there:

From Managua (Airport): The most direct way to get to San Juan del Sur is by taking a tourist shuttle or a private taxi. The journey takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. Alternatively, you can take a local microbus from the UCA bus terminal in Managua to Rivas, and from there, transfer to another bus or a taxi to San Juan del Sur.

From other cities:

San Juan del Sur is well-connected to other tourist destinations. Direct tourist shuttles are available from Granada, Ometepe Island (via the ferry at Rivas), and León. Its proximity to the Costa Rican border makes it a popular stop for travelers crossing between the two countries.

Best time to visit:

The dry season, from November to April, is the most popular time with sunny skies and consistent offshore winds, which create perfect conditions for surfing. The rainy season, from May to October, brings larger swells and a greener landscape, but also afternoon showers. The town is busy year-round, but peak season is from December to February.

Getting Around:

The town of San Juan del Sur is small and easily walkable. For exploring the numerous surf breaks and secluded beaches in the area, renting a scooter or an ATV is a popular and fun option. Many hostels and tour companies also operate shuttle services to the most popular beaches. Taxis are available for transport between the town and surrounding areas.

Budget:

San Juan del Sur is generally more expensive than Granada and León due to its popularity as a coastal destination. However, there are still options for every budget. A daily budget for a backpacker can range from $35 to $60, covering a hostel bed, meals at local restaurants, and some activities.

San Juan del Sur history

San Juan del Sur's history is deeply tied to its strategic location on the Pacific coast. In the mid-19th century, during the California Gold Rush, it served as a crucial transit point for prospectors traveling from the east coast of the United States to California. Travelers would sail from New York to San Juan del Sur, cross Nicaragua by land to Lake Nicaragua, and then continue by boat and another land crossing to the Caribbean coast for the final sail to California. This historic route brought prosperity to the town long before it became a tourist and surf destination. Today, the town's main economic driver is tourism, drawing visitors with its stunning bay and renowned surf breaks.

What to do in San Juan del Sur:

Go surfing:

This is the main attraction of San Juan del Sur. The area is famous for its offshore winds, which create perfect waves almost every day. Beginners can take lessons at beaches like Playa Remanso or Playa Hermosa, while more experienced surfers can head to Playa Maderas, known for its consistent and powerful waves.

Hike to the Christ of the Mercy statue:

For the best views of the town and the bay, hike up to the towering Christ of the Mercy statue. At 134 meters tall, it is one of the largest Christ statues in the world. The moderate hike offers panoramic views that are particularly beautiful during sunset.

Embark on a catamaran cruise:

Sailing along the coast is a popular way to experience the area. Many companies offer day-long catamaran tours, often referred to as "booze cruises," that take you to private beaches for swimming and snorkeling while enjoying drinks and music. It is a fantastic way to see the coastline from a different perspective.

Go beach hopping:

The true beauty of San Juan del Sur lies in its surrounding beaches. Rent a scooter, quad, or a local shuttle service to explore them. Playa Hermosa is a beautiful, expansive beach, while Playa Gigante offers a more rustic and quiet vibe. Each beach has its own unique character.

Deep-sea fishing:

San Juan del Sur is a prime location for deep-sea fishing. Fishing charters are available for half-day or full-day trips, with the chance to catch species like mahi-mahi, tuna, and red snapper.

Explore the town:

Simply wandering the streets of San Juan del Sur is an activity in itself. The town has a lively and international feel, with colorful buildings, a wide array of restaurants and bars, and a laid-back atmosphere. Enjoy the beachfront view from a restaurant or relax in a hammock.
